Overlooked Spring Cleaning: Add These Tasks to Your List
Spring is on the horizon, and for many of us that means more time out of the house enjoying the sunshine and warmer weather. Before you head outdoors and leave the comfort your home has provided all winter, think about a few potentially overlooked items you can add to your spring cleaning checklist. Here are a few things you can do to start the season off fresh:
- Light Switches and Doorknobs: These constantly used parts of the home are gathering places for dirt and bacteria. Make sure to give each one a good wipe down every once in a while, especially after anyone in the house falls ill.
- Vacuum the Mattress: While you are swapping out heavy winter bedding for lighter blankets for spring, consider stripping everything off and giving the mattress a good vacuum. Our mattresses can collect lots of icky things over time and this could help not only your sleep quality, but your indoor air quality as a whole.
- Wipe the Walls: Giving the house a fresh coat of paint is the ultimate way to update the walls of a room, but even just going over the walls and baseboards with dish soap and a damp cloth can make them sparkle again.
- Go Through the First Aid Kit: Now is a good time to give your first aid kit a once over. It may not be something that you use very frequently, but if/when you need something from it you want it to be there! Make sure you have the basics like bandages and antibiotic cream, but think about adding some other necessities like a flashlight or bottled water in case of some strong spring storms.
- Check Batteries: It is never a convenient time when something runs out of batteries. Prevent that frustration by checking and changing batteries on things like remotes and smoke/carbon monoxide detectors throughout the house. Make sure you also check your fire extinguisher to make sure it is not past its expiration date.
- Clean the Appliances: Our appliances do a good job of cleaning things for us, but when was the last time you gave them a good clean? Sure, maybe the refrigerator and oven are in the regular cleaning rotation, but what about the clothes washer or the dishwasher? Give these hard-working appliances a little TLC with a specially designed cleaner and see what a difference it makes in the appliance’s performance.
- Change the Filters: This one may not be forgotten, but it should still be a part of every spring cleaning list. Make sure you change out the filters on your furnace and air conditioner to keep them running optimally. These filters should be changed regularly; every six months in pet-free homes, and every two in homes with furry friends.
