5 Ways to Beat the Cold Weather Blues

As the calendar flips to February, it may seem as though the cold weather will never leave. Winters in the Midwest can feel cold, dark and never ending, so finding activities to keep us going until spring are key. Here is a list of some of our favorite winter activities to help banish those cold weather blues.

Bring Back the Sourdough. During the early days of the pandemic it seemed like everyone was baking bread and making their own sourdough starters. Well, dust off those oven mitts and get to baking! Baking bread, or any baked goods really, will warm up your kitchen and fill your house with delicious smells.

Take a Class. Learning new things is fun at any age. Getting out and trying something you have never done before can be a great way to engage and meet new people as well. Places that teach you painting, pottery, knitting, and more have popped up all over recently. Seek one out and enjoy a potential new hobby!

Play a Game. When was the last time you unplugged and spent time playing a good old fashioned board game? If it has been awhile, it may be time to put the devices down and get everyone together for a game of Monopoly or Chutes and Ladders. If games aren’t really your thing, break out a puzzle and spend some time strengthening your brain cells while putting the pieces together.

Make Your Way to the Museum. On those dreary days, take yourself on an adventure to a local museum. There are often new exhibits to see and many even offer free tours so that you can get the most out of your experience. You may discover a new favorite spot in your city!

Volunteer Your Time. Winter is a hard time on many people throughout the community. Volunteering at a local organization can make you feel good while you are doing good. Many organizations have one-time opportunities as well as ongoing and group opportunities so you can pick what is right for you.
